Saving the tooth first

Extraction is the last option, not the first. Where a tooth can realistically be restored with a filling, root canal treatment or a crown, we will set out that route and its cost so you can make an informed comparison.

Sometimes the tooth is simply beyond repair — split below the gum, or supported by too little bone — and removing it is the right decision.

The procedure and healing

The area is fully numbed and the tooth is eased out; you feel pressure but should not feel pain. Surgical extractions involve raising the gum and sometimes sectioning the tooth, and may need stitches.

Expect some bleeding for a short period, and swelling and soreness for a few days. Follow the aftercare instructions closely — particularly avoiding rinsing, smoking and straws in the first 24 hours, since disturbing the clot can cause a painful dry socket.

Replacing the tooth

Think about replacement before the extraction, not after. Adjacent teeth drift and opposing teeth over-erupt into a gap over time. Options are a denture, a bridge from £450 per unit, or an implant from £1,700 with a crown from £1,350.

Common questions

Extractions: your questions answered

How much does a tooth extraction cost in Wolverhampton?

Simple extractions are £110 and surgical extractions £290 at Wolverhampton Dental, with 10% off for plan members. An emergency appointment to assess the tooth is £41.

Does having a tooth out hurt?

The area is numbed with local anaesthetic so you should feel pressure but not pain during the extraction. Soreness for a few days afterwards is normal and usually managed with over-the-counter pain relief.

How long does the socket take to heal?

The gum closes over within a couple of weeks and the bone remodels over a few months. Follow the aftercare advice for the first 24 hours to reduce the risk of a dry socket.
