Key facts
Fees shown are from our published price guide. Your written treatment plan confirms costs before anything begins.
When wisdom teeth need to come out
Not all of them do. Current UK guidance is against removing wisdom teeth that are causing no problems. Removal is indicated for repeated pericoronitis (infection of the gum flap over a partly erupted tooth), decay that cannot be restored, damage to the second molar in front, or cyst formation.
If yours are symptom-free and cleanable, monitoring is usually the right answer.
Assessment and referral
We assess with clinical examination and radiographs — usually a large OPG at £60 — to see root shape and the position of the tooth relative to the nerve in the lower jaw. That determines whether removal is straightforward here or better carried out by an oral surgeon.
Where referral is appropriate we will arrange it rather than attempt a case that would be safer elsewhere.
Recovery
Expect swelling, stiffness and soreness peaking around 48 hours and easing over the following days. Soft food, careful cleaning around the site, and following aftercare instructions on rinsing and smoking make a substantial difference to comfort and healing.
Common questions
Wisdom Teeth Removal: your questions answered
Do all wisdom teeth need removing?
No. Wisdom teeth that are healthy, fully erupted, correctly positioned and cleanable should be left alone. Removal is for teeth causing infection, decay, damage or cysts.
How much does wisdom tooth removal cost?
Surgical extraction is £290 at Wolverhampton Dental. A large OPG radiograph, usually needed for assessment, is £60. Cases referred to an oral surgeon are quoted by that provider.
How long is the recovery?
Most people are comfortable within three to five days, with swelling peaking around 48 hours. Take a day or two of light activity after a surgical removal where possible.
