How composite fillings work

Decay is removed and the cavity is cleaned, then the tooth surface is conditioned so the composite chemically bonds to it. The material is placed in layers, each set with a curing light, then shaped and polished to match the tooth's anatomy.

Because composite bonds to the tooth, less healthy structure needs removing than with traditional amalgam preparations.

Aftercare

You can eat as soon as any anaesthetic has worn off. Some sensitivity to cold for a few days is common, particularly with deeper fillings, and should settle. Persistent or worsening pain is worth a call.

Common questions

White Fillings: your questions answered

How much is a white filling in Wolverhampton?

White composite or glass ionomer fillings are £120 to £280 at Wolverhampton Dental depending on size and position, with 10% off for plan members.

How long do white fillings last?

Typically five to ten years, depending on size, position and your bite. Very large restorations in back teeth may be better served by an inlay, onlay or crown.

Can I have my silver fillings replaced with white ones?

Yes, this is commonly done for cosmetic reasons. We will advise where replacement is genuinely beneficial and where a sound existing filling is better left undisturbed.
